Global steel production increased 5.6% in December

Global crude steel production for the 71 countries reporting to industry organisation World Steel Association (worldsteel) was 144.5-million tonnes in December, which is a 5.6% increase compared with December 2023.

Africa produced 1.9-million tonnes in December, down 1% compared with December 2023. Asia and Oceania produced 106.3-million tonnes, up 9% year-on-year.

The 27 EU countries produced 9.6-million tonnes, up 7.2%. Other European countries produced 3.3-million tonnes, down 14.3%. The Middle East produced 4.6-million tonnes, down 4.5%.

North America produced 8.8-million tonnes, down 4.3% on the prior year. Russia and other Commonwealth of Independent States and Ukraine produced 6.8-million tonnes, down 6.8%. South America produced 3.1-million tonnes, down 3.8% on December 2023.

In terms of the top ten steel producing countries, China produced 76-million tonnes in December, up 11.8% on December 2023. India produced 13.6-million tonnes, up 9.5%. Japan produced 6.9-million tonnes, down 1.1%.

The US produced 6.7-million tonnes, down 2.4%. Russia is estimated to have produced 5.7-million tonnes, down 8.6%. South Korea produced 5.2-million tonnes, down 3.2%. Germany produced 2.7-million tonnes, up 4.1%.

Türkiye produced 3-million tonnes, down 7.6%. Brazil produced 2.6-million tonnes, up 1.8%. Iran produced 2.6-million tonnes, down 8.2%.

Total global crude steel production was 1 882.6-million tonnes in 2024.
